Numerous events in 2012 reminded us of how difficult it still is for women to live in freedom and with dignity. Pakistani school girl Malala was shot in the head because she demanded for girls’ rights to receive education; an Indian university student was raped, tortured and left to die on the streets; in Hong Kong, a student committed suicide, hinted at discrimination because of her androgynous appearance; sexual minorities in Hong Kong face enormous difficulties in even getting a public consultation on sex orientation discrimination legislation; the “Brides Wannbe” TV show stigmatizes single women as unwanted and inferior; local women’s keen reception to fashion store A&F’s marketing tactics drew condemnation which were completely out of proportion…
The 300,000 foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong are forced to live in atrocious environments, without the choice of “living out”; their blatant exploitation by employment agencies, tolerated by governments, continues to be a disgrace!
Today, there still exists in our world much unnecessary and outdated norms and regulations governing women’s appearances, bodies, sexual autonomy and sexual orientation, on top of the threats of sexual violence and discrimination! Nevertheless, we still witness the courage of women who insist on living life the way they see it.
For International Women’s day this year (8th March 2013), the Association for the Advancement of Feminism is hosting this event for us to upload pictures and declarations, to collect women’s inspirational stories as a manifestation of our solidarity. Please join us by sharing women’s stories that fit in with our two broad themes below:
“Dare to be me” – Women who live life as they see it, in spite of societal and cultural conventions and norms; e.g. marital and maternal life, diverse relationship forms, physical appearances, or the fight for the rights of sexual and gender minorities.
“Sisters unite” – We all live under the cage of “gender trouble” and thus are all in the same boat. We welcome you to join hands with us, make change for a better world!
Via Facebook: please upload your “Dare to be me” and/or “Sisters unite” pictures and stories (e.g. a short description), to this facebook even page between 4th March and 31st March 2013 (www.facebook.com/events/158545267636659/)
