AAF domestic worker subcommittee, study group second round
what’s next? everybody let’s read

The first round of Study Group of Migrant Domestic Worker (MDW) Subcommittee, themed as ‘One of the Family’, had been ended in May. We would like to express our gratefulness to have participants sharing their insights and experience. Without them, it would be impossible to have such fruitful discussions. This July, in order to prepare for the upcoming round, we held the ‘Books and More Party’ to invite past participants and new friends to bring their favorite texts. Surprisingly, all of them were appealing and have been included in the upcoming ‘reading list’. What’s more, participants will be invited to be organizers this time—they will plan and host the sessions in which their favorite text appears.

The upcoming round will begin this month and we are more than delighted to have Alex, a local supporter for migrant domestic workers’ social movement, to lead the first session. Interestingly, the text he will bring is not book nor film, but ‘photos’, a form of text had never appeared in the study group before.

‘I’ve never thought that MDWs are my enlightenment!’ said Alex.

From Alex’s point of view, MDWs are not just bearing the identity of ‘worker’, but also ‘movement organizer’, ‘policy advocate’, ‘researcher’, ‘performer’ …… The sad truth is, their job, confining at domestic sphere, hinders workers from developing multiple identities, except Sunday (the only holiday in a week). Therefore, Alex spent most of his Sundays in participating in the leisure activities and movements initiated by workers, to record their multiple faces and talents through means of photos. In the next Study Group of August, he will bring his photos to share the back stories and also his experience along the social movements.
