The movie Temple Grandin has won a Golden Globe, seven Emmys and a Humanitas Prize. In all, it has received 33 awards from a range of organizations including The Women Film Critics Circle, The Women’s Image Network and PETA. The breadth of these awards shows that this film is about far more than the autism of its main character, Temple Grandin. Through her story, the movie reveals a world of interconnected discrimination – ableism, sexism and speciesism.

Temple Grandin was an outcast when she was young. She thought in pictures, had difficulty with words, and was hypersensitive to sound and touch. A farm holiday changed her life. She fell in love with farm animals. Her passion carried her to university where she studied animal behaviour.
She developed a ramp system so that cattle could march their way to the killing floor free from panic about injuring themselves. This panic often brought aggression towards them from their handlers. The ramp was Temple Grandin’s way to offer cattle a little respect in a cruel world. However, the ramp sparked heated debate among vegetarians and vegans. Critics charged that the ramp system only worked to boost the efficiency of abattoirs while turning potential vegetarians towards so-called “humane” meat. Debate on this moral dilemma continues. We all know that the evil of animal based consumption doesn’t lie only in the moment when the animal is killed. So, it is high time that we dig up more deeply entrenched connections.
