This series of workshops on Gender Plus Politics brings together women and queer activists, politicians across Hong Kong to share their experiences of participating in the 2016 Legislative Council election. We hope to discuss the specific challenges, obstacles and barriers that they encountered in crafting their political career and managing their own personal lives, especially on gender, sexual identity, family position, ethnicity and other social roles. We are also interested in their strategies using the media and social media.
In this workshop, we have invited two legislative councilors to share with us their experience in election and the ensuing consequences on their self-presentation in public, performance in the media sphere and intimate relationships. Injustices experienced in their personal relationships and social movement participation is another highlighted issue.
We shall also introduce collaborative focus group analysis and participatory research methods for understanding social movement participation and for the promotion of democratic knowledge production as part of our struggles for democracy.
